Igbo Cosmology: Odachi Nne Eke | Full Film | Sirius Ugo Art

Odachi Nne Eke / Ọdachi Nne Ebere / Ọdachi Komosu is one of the most ancient Igbo cosmology and cosmogony that explains the origin of our universe through fire and water (Ọkụ na Mmịrị), in connection to the four elements known in Igbo as Eke, Oye/Orie, Afọ/Ahọ and Nkwo.

In the very beginning without end, there was Obi Mbu (the very first realm), which is the cosmic womb of Akwu Agali Ose. This cosmic womb can also be called AKWU by itself. And inside Akwu holds all that will be. The entire unbirthed universe was in Akwu, which is also Mgba Nnechukwu. This cosmic location goes by many names in Igbo.

At the very center of Obi Mbu, there exist Obi Chukwu (the secret cosmic house of the great Chi). A realm so secret that even his wife (Nne Chukwu) was not allowed to know what goes on inside. She would often stay in her cosmic house (Mkpuke) wondering what her husband does in there.

She got very curious and decided to spy on him. She opened a very tiny hole to see what goes on inside in Obi Chukwu, and that caused what the Igbos call Ọwuwa Ụwa. Thus Igbo people say that Obi Chukwu Wara Awa, which means that the cosmic house of the great Chi was what broke into pieces and became the known universe.

Unfortunately, Nne Eke lost her life force from her contact with Obi Chukwu. Her body, which is also connected to Obi Chukwu was what shattered and became the known universe. Her cosmic work at Obi Mbu as the cosmic weaver became an unfinished project, then Chukwu assigned Udude Ọkwa Nka to finish her work as the cosmic weaving spider.

Chukwu decided to perform the first ịkpụ Aru with her, which is the Igbo concept of cleansing the land or land purification. As Nne Eke was laying lifeless, Chukwu used his cosmic tears to resurrect her. The cosmic celestial tears of Chukwu became the ocean, and her living body emerged from the ocean.

The first Igbo people known as Umu Adu Ana or Umu Aja Ana emerged from her living body. Thus Afa says that "Igbo so Uwa Senite", which means that Igbo emerged with the universe. The first Igbo woman is called Ọma (The benevolent one), while the first Igbo man is called Ifenta / Ihenta, which means small light.

Chukwu never truly recovered from the tragic event that took place in Obi Mbu, thus he rebuilt his secret chamber and locked his door of mercy known as Ụzọ Ọgo, and declared that Uwa bu Ometara Buru. And that Ihe Onye ọbuna metara n'ụwa, ọ ga eji ányá ya naabo fuya. We live in a world of consequences, and whatever you do in this world, you are going to face the consequences of all your actions. You reap what you sow. This was how Chukwu defined this known universe.
